The Early College Academy (ECA) is an academic enrichment program for local middle school students from PS 188, PS 140 and PS 34. The goal of the program is to enable students to develop skills to become viable candidates for selective high schools in New York City. During the academic year we operate as a Saturday program with a balanced rotation of math, humanities and science classes. In the summer the ECA is a five week intensive program committed to the aforementioned disciplines as well as creative movement, a class based on the Martha Graham technique and fundamentals of yoga. Our faculty is comprised of Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) teachers and a few adjuncts. We also have BHSEC student mentors on staff who assist teachers and act as role models for the participants. The ECA has a full-time guidance counselor during the summer who conducts mini workshops with the students on topics including stress management, note taking and organizational skills. In addition, we offer parent workshops to families including topics such as literacy and museum education. We work collaboratively with the principals at the participating schools and their liaisons to ensure the success of the program. The ECA is supported by a generous grant from the Jacob K. Javits Program at the U.S. Department of Education.
